Greece Tour

  • April 19–26, 2020 – can be included as part of the Israel tour, or as a separate standalone tour.

My first trip to the lands of the Bible was to Greece in 2004. That opened my eyes to the value of seeing first hand the areas where Paul, Silas, Timothy, Peter, and Apollos walked, taught, evangelized, baptized, and challenged the notions of pagan religion and philosophy.

Join us as we fly to Athens where we will climb the Acropolis to marvel at the Parthenon and view the same numerous pagan temples scattered around Athens that Paul witnessed. We will see Mars’ Hill and study Paul’s message to the Athenian philosophers and see many other important sights in Athens. From there we will travel to Corinth, Berea, Thessalonica, Philippi, Kavala (ancient Neopolis), and back to Athens. Many of these locations were visited by Paul on his second and third missionary journeys. The book of Acts will come alive for you.

Sunday, April 19 – DEPART USA
We take-off from our USA home heading with great anticipation to Athens, Greece. Overnight on the flight.

Monday, April 20 – ATHENS ARRIVAL
Upon arrival around 4:30 P.M.at Athens International Airport, “Eleftherios Venizelos,” meet the local representative who will assist with your transfer to the hotel. Enjoy an orientation panoramic tour of the city (according to time), before check-in. Your journey to the biblical land of Greece begins!

Tuesday, April 21 – CORINTH – NATIONAL ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM – ATHENS
Today we depart for our morning tour out of Athens. On the way, we stop at the historic Corinth Canal for some photos. It was Ancient Corinth (Acts 18:1-18) where the Apostle Paul lived and worked, establishing a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema, and Gallio’s Seat. The small local archaeological museum here is an absolute must! Then we continue on to Cenchrea, where we view the ruins of an early Christian 5th century basilica from our bus, before returning to Athens. It was the harbor of Corinth on the Saronic Gulf, whence Paul sailed for Ephesus (Acts 18:18).

We continue our sightseeing tour with a visit to the National Archaeological Museum, which displays finds from all parts of the ancient Greek world that date from Neolithic times to the last years of the Roman Empire.

Wednesday, April 22 – ATHENS CITY TOUR – ACROPOLIS – MUSEUM - MARS’ HILL – AGORA
We start our day at 8:00 A.M. with a full-day sightseeing tour of Athens. We climb up to the marble-capped Acropolis, the sacred rock of Athens and citadel of the city in antiquity. We become time travelers by visiting the famous Parthenon and the Erechtheion. Then, we go to the nearby Mars' Hill (Areopagus) to read Acts 17:22 where Paul gave his famous speech to the Athenian philosophers (Acts 17:18–34) and spoke about “an unknown god” before visiting the Acropolis museum, which was built to house every artifact found on the Acropolis, from the Greek Bronze Age to the Roman and Byzantine periods. We then visit the Agora, now in ruins, it was formerly the commercial hub of ancient Athens and birthplace of politics and philosophy. Here the Apostle Paul reasoned with the most skeptical audiences he met in the course of his travels. We see the well-preserved Doric Temple of Hephaestus (or Thesseion) and the Stoa of Attalos. Our tour continues with a panoramic bus tour including the highlights of modern Athens: we pass by the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, the Parliament House, the Academy, the University of Athens, the National Library, we view the Panathenaic Stadium (photo stop), the Temple of Olympian Zeus, and Hadrian’s Arch.

Thursday, April 23 – ATHENS – BEREA – THESSALONICA
We start our drive to Thessalonica. On our way we stop at Berea (Acts 17:10–15) where Paul arrived and according to his custom went to the synagogue where, to his pleasant surprise, he discovered that these Jews were “more noble” than those he had encountered in Thessalonica. We see the Byzantine mosaic in the monument commemorating his preaching (Acts 17:10–11). We arrive in Thessalonica in late afternoon for overnight.

Friday, April 24 – PHILIPPI – KAVALA – THESSALONICA
On our way to Philippi, we drive by the Lion of Amphipolis (short stop for photos). We visit Philippi, the site where Paul established a strong church. To this congregation he sent his letter (Acts 16:9–33). We see the river where Lydia is said to have been baptized, the ruins of a prison where the Apostle Paul and Sylas had been kept, the Agora, 5th and 6th century Basilica and the Theater. After the visit, we continue to Kavala, the ancient port of Neapolis (Acts 16:11) where we enjoy a panoramic tour before returning to Thessalonica for overnight.

Saturday, April 25 – THESSALONICA – ATHENS
Today we take the return way to Athens. Before departure we enjoy a city tour of Thessalonica (Acts 17:1) where Paul went immediately to the synagogue and for three Saturdays he explained the prophecies of the Old Testament to Jews and Greeks. According to the Book of the Acts, many Greeks believed and even many “Greek chief women” (Acts 17:1–4). We go to the upper Old City Walls then drive along the Egnatian Way to see the Triumphal Arch of Galerius and the Rotunda. After the visit journey back to Athens where we arrive in the evening for overnight.

Sunday, April 26 – DEPARTURE FLIGHT HOME (OR TO TEL AVIV)
Following breakfast, escorted transfer to the Athens airport for your departure flight home or to Tel Aviv, if you've selected the combination tour.

Israel Tour

A trip to Israel is a phenomenal experience. First, it is a continuous Bible study. You will never, ever read your Bible the same way again. Second, it will open your eyes to current events. You will never, ever read or hear the news about the Middle East from the same perspective.

We will spend 9-½ days in Israel, and visit major biblical sites. We will walk where Old Testament prophets, the disciples, and Jesus walked (we will also float where Jesus walked!). And we will gain a deeper understanding of the Scriptures. (There is also a seven-day extension to Greece as an optional part of the Israel trip.)

This is a partial study tour to help us better understand the biblical and historical roots of Christianity and the Hebrew Scriptures, which find their full meaning in Jesus the Messiah. We will tour archaeological remains, biblical settings, geography, culture, traditions, and other activities. This will be a life-changing experience—in addition to being a fun and enjoyable trip.

The weather will be warm, but should not be hot, though there are always exceptions. Though the political situation may sometimes flare up, we are always very cautious and keep in contact with authorities about what is happening. Sometimes there are conflicts, but usually not where we go. I have been to Israel many times and have never encountered any difficulty or seen anything remotely hostile. Since tourism is Israel’s #1 industry, they protect and watch out for their guests.

The trip will include a fair amount of walking, but usually in short amounts and on smooth pavements. Jerusalem, though, will involve more walking. We have had people from ages 12–78 fully enjoy these trips. We always travel at a pace everyone can handle. I have a tour trip guide I send to everyone who registers which explains more about the trip and what you can expect.

Together we will discover the modern miracle of Israel and learn about the wonders of the State of Israel today. It will be a trip of a lifetime and one you will never forget.

Saturday, April 25 – DEPARTURE FLIGHT FROM HOUSTON, TX
Our flight to Israel will leave Houston George Bush Airport on Saturday, arriving in Tel Aviv, Israel on Sunday.

Sunday, April 26 – ARRIVE IN TEL AVIV – CAESAREA MARITIMA
Acts 26:28, “Then Agrippa said to Paul, ‘You almost persuaded me to become a Christian’.”
Since we arrive in the morning, we will make a few stops, including lunch, on the way to Caesarea Maritima—Herod’s display city built to appeal to the Gentiles. Philip and his daughters lived here, Peter gave the gospel to Cornelius, the gospel went to the Gentiles, King Agrippa I died after his presumptuous performance on stage in the theater here, and Paul was imprisoned here before being sent to Rome.

We will take a brief tour of the site in the afternoon. We will then check in to our hotel, the Ramada Hadera—a new hotel on the beach.

Monday, April 27 – MOUNT CARMEL – TEL MEGIDDO (ARMAGEDDON) – NAZARETH – SEA OF GALILEE
1 Kings 18:21, “And Elijah came to all the people, and said, ‘How long will you falter between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow Him; but if Baal, follow him’.”

After leaving Caesarea we will drive through the Mount Carmel range to visit the site of Elijah’s confrontation with the priests of Ba’al and King Ahab. From there we will visit Tel Megiddo (“Har Megiddo,” “the mount of Megiddo,” “Armageddon”). There we will look over the Jezreel Valley and recount numerous biblical events that transpired there. Next we will go to the village of Nazareth and come to rest for the night near Tiberias (on the Sea of Galilee) at Sea of Galilee Hotel.

Tuesday, April 28 – CAPERNAUM – CAESAREA PHILIPPI/BANIAS – TEL DAN – MT. ARBEL
Matt. 4:13, “And leaving Nazareth, He came and dwelt in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the regions of Zebulun and Naphtali.”
From here we will tour Ginosar where we will see the “Jesus boat,” then on to Capernaum, where Jesus, Peter, James, and John lived. Next we head north to Caesarea Philippi and Banias. Our drive north will give us a sighting of the way of the Road to Damascus.

Against the background of the rock escarpment at Banias and the remains of the temples to the god Pan, Peter expressed his understanding of who Jesus was and Jesus announced the foundation of His Church on a rock. From there we go to Tel Dan and walk alongside the rushing stream as we go to the ancient Israelite altar and high place (made for the golden calf). We will also see an early arched entrance gate to the Canaanite city from the time of Abraham.

Upon our return, if time permits, we will drive to the top of Mt. Arbel for a view of the Galilee. If anyone wishes to be baptized, we may do that here at Ginosar. We will again stay at the Sea of Galilee Hotel.

Wednesday, April 29 – MT. GILBOA – HAROD SPRING – BETH SHEAN – JERICHO – JERUSALEM
Josh. 6:2, “And the LORD said to Joshua: ‘See! I have given Jericho into your hand, its king, and the mighty men of valor’.”
Today we will drive south to briefly visit Mt. Gilboa and Harod Spring where Gideon thinned out the Israelite army and where King Saul took his own life. Next we will visit the remarkably extensive ruins at Beth Shean, then on to Jericho before arriving at Jerusalem and the Mount of Olives. Our “home” for the next six nights will be the Leonardo Plaza Hotel.

Thursday, April 30 – JERUSALEM – ISRAEL MUSEUM, MUSEUM OF THE SCROLL – FRIENDS OF ZION MUSEUM
Today is Shabbat. We will visit the Israel Museum, the Museum of the Scroll, the Friends of Zion Museum, and see some other sites in Jerusalem.

Friday, May 1 – MASADA – EN GEDI – DEAD SEA – QUMRAN
We will rise early to depart for Masada before the heat sets in. Masada, the majestic desert fortress built by Herod, and used by the Zealots after AD 73, in defiance of Rome. From there we will travel to En Gedi, where David hid from Saul. As we walk the trail to the waterfall, some may wish to swim in the pools along the way to stay cool. After lunch we will investigate Qumran, the site of the Dead Sea Scrolls, and conclude our day with a float on the Dead Sea before returning to Jerusalem.

Saturday, May 2 through Thursday, May 7 – JERUSALEM – VALLEY OF ELAH – HEBRON
There is so much to see in Jerusalem that it is almost impossible to determine which day we will see which places, or when we will have tickets scheduled for some sites. In Jerusalem we will see: the Temple Mount, the City of David, Mount of Olives, Garden of Gethsemane, Church of the Holy Sepulcher, Bethesda, the Jewish Quarter in the Old City, the Garden Tomb, the Temple Institute Museum, and much more.
During one of these days we will also go south of Jerusalem to the Valley of Elah where David fought Goliath, and Hebron to the Tomb of the Patriarchs.

May 6 we will have a farewell dinner and then be whisked off to the airport at Tel Aviv for our flight back home, arriving in the USA on May 7.

Each day we will have short Bible studies on the respective sites, making the Bible come alive right before your eyes.
